World-wide, there are approximately 180 species of woodpeckers.  They get their name from the manner in which they obtain their food--pecking at tree trunks and branches to dig out wood-boring insects.  The most famous woodpecker is the cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker.  Most woodpeckers have very dramatic black and white markings, making them ideal subjects for our home decor.
